Shaving shouldn't be feared

For many ethnic men and women, a condition called Pseudofolliculitis Barbae (PFB) can be hard to deal with. It’s when you get ingrown hairs after shaving too close with a razor. As a solution, some men just grow out their beards while women result to heavy makeup. PFB is a “splinter” reaction in the skin. This condition is caused because ethnic hair is coarse and usually grows curly. When shaved too closed the hair is cut below the skin and instead of growing straight out of the hair follicle, the curly hair begins to coil and grow into neighboring skin. The skin reacts to the invading hair by becoming irritated and bumpy, which results in dark spots and skin discoloration. For women, the areas that may be affected by PFB are the bikini line, stomach area and armpits.

Bumps on the back of the Neck : We all want to look good and that cool hair style with the close shave and fade at the back of the neck would really look nice, right? Not if it causes acne keloidalis - infections at the back of the neck around the hair follicles, which result in scarring, skin thickening, skin discoloration and hair loss. Skin irritation from shave hair cuts, not dirty clippers are the main culprit of this condition. A tight cap, certain products or profuse brushing can start the condition. Acne keloidalis hurts, itches and bleeds and it makes skin uncomfortable and unattractive.

Acne keloidalis doesn't happen overnight. It is the result of constant irritation, scratching or rubbing and the first sign is tiny acne-like lesions. Not all irritations will result in acne keloidalis. To stop acne keloidalis from forming, the skin must not be irritated any longer. Consider getting a gentler haircut or stop using the irritating product. The treatment depends on the stage of the infection and scar formation.
